Nilzon Ceferino Campo, a former councilor on the Honduras reservation, was killed Nov. 13 in the town of Suarez, the Indigenous Regional Council of Cauca, or CRIC, said in a statement.
The 33-year-old Campo, “like many leaders in the zone, has been the object of threats from unknown actors,” CRIC said, expressing concern about “the grave situation currently faced by the indigenous peoples in Cauca.”
The victim worked “tirelessly” for his people, serving at various times as secretary, treasurer, vice president and president of the council in Honduras, the statement said.
Several community leaders have been among the more than 80 Indians slain this year in the Andean nation, according to the National Indigenous Organization of Colombia.
