Benitez looking to claim spot in FCD defense

Left back has been something of a question mark for FC Dallas this season. Before Friday's 4-2 loss at Real Salt Lake, FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman had started four different players on the left side, often with mixed results.

Against RSL, recent signee Jair Benitez became the fifth different FCD player to start there. However it appears that the Colombian looks poised to stick there.

By all accounts, Benitez's MLS debut was pretty solid. In the second half, he was whistled for a foul inside the box on RSL's Robbie Findley, a call that led to Findley converting a game-tying penalty kick. Other than that play, Benitez was effective on both sides of the ball and gave FCD something they have not had for most of 2009, a left back who could get forward on a regular basis.

It was a whirlwind week for the new FCD defender. After being signed on Wednesday, FCD got his international transfer certificate on Friday and just two days after joining his new club, he made his league debut.
