Colombia Plans to Spend $25 Million on New Drones

Apr 20 -- The Colombian government plans to spend $25 million to acquire new drones to hunt down the leaders of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, guerrilla group and track drug traffickers, the press reported on Sunday

The drones are on a list of weapons to be purchased with the revenues from a new tax on the wealthy, the El Tiempo newspaper said.

Firms from the United States, Israel and Britain, among other countries, have presented proposals to the Defense Ministry, which is evaluating them.

The drones would be used to provide intelligence to recently acquired warplanes, which would target the FARC in an effort to finish off the guerrilla group, the newspaper said.
