Colombian Court urged to allow referendum on 3rd term for Uribe

Jan 14--Colombia’s inspector general asked the Constitutional Court not to block a referendum on amending the national charter to allow President Alvaro Uribe to seek a third term.

The IG office’s recommendation is not binding on the tribunal, which has up to 90 business days to pass judgment on the constitutionality of the proposed plebiscite.

The presidential election is set for May.

In announcing his findings, Inspector General Alejandro Ordoñez said that if Uribe does make a bid to extend his tenure, he should be careful to abide by the Law of Electoral Guarantees, a measure designed to stop officeholders from abusing the powers of incumbency.
