Colombian Drug Lord Gets Life In Prison

Jan 13 -- A Colombian drug lord was sentenced to life in prison today, the culmination of an investigation by a multiagency task force created to stop the flow of cocaine from South America to the United States, federal prosecutors say.

In a related case, five Jamaican nationals have pleaded guilty to charges of smuggling drugs into the U.S., the U.S. Attorney's Office announced today.

The two investigations were conducted by Operation Panama Express, which targets Colombian drug smuggling operations. Members of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the FBI, IRS and U.S. Coast Guard are part of the task force.

Today, Ivan Gonzalez-Bejarano was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Steven D. Merryday to life in prison on charges of conspiring to import and distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine.
