Colombia’s Santos Widens Lead Over Mockus in Presidential Poll

May 21--Colombia’s former Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos widened his lead before the first-round presidential election and may win in a runoff ballot with Green Party candidate Antanas Mockus, according to a poll by Centro Nacional de Consultoria.

Santos, of the La U party, would get 39 percent in the first round of voting May 30, compared with 34 percent for Mockus, according to the poll published last night by CM& Television. The candidates would receive 47 percent and 46 percent respectively in the second-round vote June 20, a gap that’s within the poll’s margin of error.

A candidate needs more than 50 percent of the first-round vote to avoid a runoff.

A CNC poll last week showed Santos leading Mockus by 2 points in the first round of voting, and each garnering 47 percent in the second ballot.
