Facebook campaign for British volunteer worker left paralysed in Colombia
Jan 12--Friends of a British volunteer worker left paralysed from the neck down by an accident in a remote region of Colombia have used Facebook and Twitter to raise more than £22,000 to pay for his return to Britain.
The graduate, described by friends as a "truly exceptional young man", had recently found a job as a teacher at a school in the city of Cali in southern Colombia after 18 months working with street children in Guatemala.
The 32-year-old old is now in intensive care in the capital Bogota, and is unable to breath without a ventilator. He suffered two cardiac arrests last week.
His mother Carolyn, 64, a sociology lecturer at the University of Surrey, and sister Bridget have flown out to be by his side.
