New rival emerges in Colombian election: the World Cup
June 2--Juan Manuel Santos and Antanas Mockus are facing a new foe as they race to the finish in Colombia’s presidential campaign - World Cup football.
But it is also the day Brazil takes on Ivory Coast and Paraguay plays Slovakia, making it even less likely that the 51 per cent of voters who abstained in the first round will get out of their armchairs.
Both candidates are working hard to win over some 3m voters whose candidates fell by the wayside on Sunday, and Mr Santos’s call for a “government of national unity” has sparked a furious round of dealmaking between party leaders.
