Jan 29 -- U.S. President Barack Obama spoke by telephone with Colombian counterpart Alvaro Uribe, expressing to him his administration's intention to improve relations between Washington and Latin America.

The two leaders, according to White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, also discussed U.S-Colombian cooperation in areas such as the battle against drug trafficking and protection for human rights during their conversation on Tuesday.

According to the spokesman, Obama told Uribe that the United States will continue supporting "Colombia's efforts to improve its security and prosperity."
