Three Police Slain in Colombia Rebel Attack Near Venezuela Border

May 18 -- Three police officers died in an ambush that leftist rebels set for a patrol in the northeastern municipality of Cubara near the Venezuelan border, and in which two guerrillas were also killed, government officials said on Saturday.

A police spokesperson told Efe that the three police officers died trying to repulse the rebels’ attack, and that they and two rebels were gunned down in the crossfire.

The attack by the National Liberation Army, or ELN, rebels took place Friday afternoon when the police patrol was attacked while going through the hospital in Cubara, a town in Boyaca province on the Venezuelan border.
