U.N. Asks Colombia to Protect Indians

Jan 28 -- The U.N. Refugee Agency asked Colombia to protect its indigenous citizens, who are the victims of humiliation, mistreatment and even murder, and who therefore find themselves forced to flee their homes, some to neighboring Venezuela.

"UNHCR (as the agency is known) is calling on the authorities to take adequate protective and preventive measures to protect indigenous people from violence and forced displacement," spokesman Ron Redmond said at a press briefing in Geneva.

The agency is showing concern over the growing number of cases of forced displacement to which the Wayuu Indians, who live in the northeastern Colombian province of La Guajira, have been subjected.
