Avalanches in Cauca leave 10 people dead and six bridges destroyed

24 de noviembre de 2008

The El Salado ravine ran out of its course and flooded with mud and stones the municipality of Belalcazar in the south west of the country. The tons of debris that fell on the town destroyed more than 12 houses and flooded 20 more. Its 3200 inhabitants had been evacuated last Thursday after the Volcan del Huila (a volcano) erupted and created the first avalanches. They had all returned to their homes when on Sunday at midnight the water and the mud made them run out of their houses once again. Belalcazar is currently cut off.
