Colombia’s FTA not dead

27 de enero de 2009

According to Shipping Digest, President Obama is working to get the approval for the long-stalled free trade deals with countries such as Panamá, South Korea and Colombia. Charles Rangel, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, said the U.S president wants to win Congressional approval for the deals as a priority for this year.

In Colombia’s specific case, Rangel said that the problem relies on “whether the administration was prepared to insist on the protection of labor leaders in Colombia.”, as Shipping Digest reported. Rangel is confident that the White House and Congress, now both controlled by Democrats, should be able to find a solution for this problem that has been delaying the approval of the agreement.
