María Emma Mejía, Colombia’s former Foreign Minister, assumed functions as the Secretary General of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), position that she will have for the next year. Colombian and Venezuelan governments agreed to split the two year’s term, which is why Venezuelan Electricity Minister, Ali Rodríguez, will assume as secretary general one year from now. María Emma Mejía announced that her priorities will be infrastructure development, energy integration, health, security and defense. The position of secretary general remained vacant since October 2010, when former Argentinean President, Néstor Kirchner, who was UNASUR’s first secretary general, died unexpectedly.
