Government criticizes Human Rights Watch after controversial report

17 de octubre de 2008

Colombia's Vicepresidency has officially turned down a recent report by Human Rights Watch, which states that the government is "jeopardizing efforts to secure justice for crimes committed by paramilitaries and their accomplices in Colombia".

A statement read by Carlos Franco, head of Colombia's Human Rights programme, indicates that "when biased reports are produced, full of personal animosity, credibility is lost and the fight for human rights gets weaker".

Furthermore, the government understands this report as a way in which Human Rights Watch opposes the Free Trade Agreement between the United States and Colombia.
