International NGO condemns repression against native Colombian protests

17 de octubre de 2008

The International Human Rights Federation condemned the way the authorities repressed the indigenous protests in many departments of Colombia. According to that NGO, the outcome up until Thursday was of one dead native and, “more than 100 hurt –many seriously- and 8 families evicted and 19 policemen hurt as well”.

The federation also condemned the disproportionate use of force and expressed worry at the reports of apparent armed civil people who were shooting at the crowd and were supposedly being protected by the police. They also denounced that the public force tried to hinder medical and humanitarian attention for the natives. The NGO also rejects those versions that say that Farc members allegedly were behind the protests and mentions that infiltrated members of the military, who had communication equipments and explosives with them, were found in some of the native reservoirs.
