Meeting between President Uribe and indigenous protesters failed

27 de octubre de 2008

President Alvaro Uribe arrived three hours late to his meeting with The National Indigenous Organization of Colombia (ONIC) in Cali yesterday which left the protesters very frustrated and angry. They didn’t allow Uribe to speak and shouted out “paraco, paraco” (a colloquial way of calling the paramilitaries) at him. The president left the place visibly angry and rebutted saying they shouldn’t have invited him to negotiate if they didn’t want to let him speak.

More than 20.000 natives that marched to Cali might continue their protest by walking all the way to Bogotá. Uribe offered today to meet with the ONIC in Popayan on Sunday, but the organization hasn’t replied his request.
