Number of landmine victims in Colombia decreased: Landmine Monitor

According to the most recent report by the Landmine Monitor, an international research and monitoring institute, "in 2007, for the first time since 2002, recorded casualties due to explosive devices decreased in Colombia, but figures still remained among the highest in the world." Last year,  895 people were affected by landmines in Colombia, whereas the previous year 1,167 victims were found. The fall might be a result of the programmes developed by the government to deactivate landmines.

The report also states that "in 2007, seven countries reported providing $8,785,053 (€6,407,303) to mine action in Colombia. Reported mine action funding in 2007 was 103% more than reported in 2006".
