According to the U.N. Office of Drugs and Crime, coca crops have decreased in Colombia since 2007 going from 99.000 acres to 81.000 acres in 2008, an 18% reduction. The historic number has been attributed to the manual eradication of coca, that according to the UN, reaches a total of 96,100 acres.

Nevertheless, Colombia analyst Adam Isacson, of the Washington-based Center for International Policy said that the Colombian government should not be celebrating. “Peasants who lost their savings in collapsed pyramid schemes began replanting coca on a huge scale in October”, said the analyst.
