Claudia Castillo, a 30 year old woman born in Cali who has lived in Spain for the past 9 years, had the first successful trachea transplant. She was operated in Barcelona after suffering from tuberculosis for many years and being close to dying from de disease. She received the trachea from a 51 year old man who died from cerebral hemorrhaging, and the procedure was complemented with her own stem cells producing an organ that was partly engineered with her own tissue.
