Marco Fidel Barba Galarcio and three of his associates were detained Sunday in a jungle area near the border with Panama, National Police director Gen. Oscar Naranjo told reporters.

The arrest of Barba, accused of kidnapping, extortion and murdering police officers in Antioquia and neighboring Cordoba province, was made possible by the “constant pressure” exerted by drug enforcement agents for more than two weeks, Naranjo said.

Barba took on a “very important” role in coordinating the drug trafficking network led by Rendon, alias “Don Mario,” after the latter’s capture in April, the National Police chief said.

Rendon was second-in-command of the Elmer Cardenas Bloc of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, or AUC, militia federation.

The AUC, accused of committing numerous human rights violations, demobilized more than 31,000 of its fighters between the end of 2003 and mid-2006 as part of the peace process with the Uribe administration.
