Universidad de Chile beat Deportivo Cali 2-1 in the inaugurating match of the 2009 Copa Sudamericana in Santiago, Chile, on Tuesday night.
The Chileans won the match with two goals from Uruguayan striker Juan Manuel Olivera in the second half.
Deportivo Cali started strongly as they looked to take a surprise lead. They came close to doing this with early efforts from Juan Carlos Marino and Sergio Herrera.
The visitors dominated proceedings, but couldn't find the back of the net even if they created several opportunities.
Universidad also had their chances to score late in the first half, but both teams went into the break even.
Two minutes into the second period Cali went ahead when Sergio Herrera connected to a left wing Juan Dominguez cross with a precise header.
