Cuba Offers to Mediate to Win Colombian Hostage’s Release

May 18 -- Cuban Ambassador to Colombia Jose Antonio Perez said Havana was willing to serve as a mediator to win the release of Pablo Emilio Moncayo, a soldier who has been held hostage by the FARC guerrilla group for more than 11 years, as long as the government and the rebels agree to the arrangement, Caracol Radio reported.

“Cuba has been, throughout this time, always ready to cooperate and help (work for) peace in Colombia, provided that the involved parties wanted it,” the envoy told Caracol Radio from the city of Manizales.

Perez confirmed his country’s desire to collaborate to achieve peace in Colombia and offered Cuban territory and mediation efforts so that Moncayo could be handed over.
