Environmentalists Launch Holy Week Campaign in Colombia

Apr 06 -- The Quindio wax palm, Colombia’s national tree, and the yellow-eared parrot are the objects of a protection campaign that is now in its seventh year and is being especially pushed during the season leading up to Holy Week, environmental groups said.

During Holy Week, “unfortunately, the serious threats being suffered by several species of fauna and flora” are worsening, according to the Fundacion ProAves, adding that some species are in “critical danger of extinction.”

Along with the yellow-eared parrot (Ognorhynchus icterotis) and the Quindio wax palm (Ceroxylum quindiuense), the season of Lent is also the time when people consume the most iguana and turtle meat and eggs, according to the non-governmental organization dedicated to environmental study and conservation.
