Jailed Colombian Financier Says He Gave Money to Uribe Allies

Apr 03 -- Colombian finance mogul David Murcia Guzman, jailed on charges he ran a pyramid scheme, said he gave almost $2 million to the promoters of a campaign seeking a constitutional change allowing President Alvaro Uribe to run for a third consecutive term.

In an interview with Bogota magazine Cambio, Murcia said his DMG conglomerate contributed some 5 billion pesos (around $1.97 million) to that political project.

The funds were “channeled through several business people,” added Murcia, who was arrested last November in Panama and immediately extradited to Colombia to face charges of illegal money collecting and money laundering.
