3 de marzo de 2009

After the 10th anniversary of the Ottawa Treaty entering to force, Colombia’s Vice President Francisco Santos ratified the country’s intentions to eliminate the use of landmines in the decade-long civil conflict.

According to government stats, 1,692 Colombians have been killed by landmines since 1990 and 5,759 have been injured after stepping on one of these artifacts. In 2008, mines killed 149 citizens.

Minister of Defense Juan Manuel Santos revealed that there are currently four military units working to remove landmines around the country.

Between the 30th November and the 4th December, a Review Conference of the Convention will be held in Cartagena.
