Colombian government rejects Hugo Chavez’s influence in internal affairs

25 de agosto de 2009

The new Colombian minister of Defense, Gabriel Silva, has asked Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to be respectful of Colombia’s sovereignty, just as Colombia respects the political models and interests of other nations. He added that Colombia’s democracy was firm and transparent, and that no foreign intervention would be tolerated. This statement responds to president Chavez declaration that he will seek ties with leftist political parties in Colombia.

Spokesmen from various political parties have also declared they would not approve or allow any Venezuelan intervention in Colombia’s political affairs and the government will present a formal complain to the OAS.
