Leftist group wants to build a square in honor of Farc historical leader Manuel Marulanda ‘Tirofijo’

25 de septiembre de 2008

A group of leftist organizations in Venezuela started to build a square on the west side of Caracas in honor of Manuel Marulanda ‘Tirofijo’, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc) historical leader who passed away in march. He had been in the underground for more than 44 years, and died in his hideout somewhere in the mountains of Colombia. The square will also have a bust of ‘Tirofijo’. “It’s a cause of pride being able to participate and pay tribute to this comrade”, said Zenaida Tahhan, member of the Coordinadora Continental Bolivariana (CCB), an organization of extreme left activists that has historically supported the Farc, while announcing that the place will be unveiled tomorrow.

The Colombian Congress was appalled by this initiative, since the Colombian Government, as well as the United States and the European Union have appointed the Farc as a terrorist organization, which has brought violence and death to the country, leaving many victims behind. “This constitutes an international justification of crime”, declared the commission for foreign politics, defense and national security of the Senate.
