President Uribe accepts police did shoot against indigenous protesters

23 de octubre de 2008

Last night, hours after CNN showed footage of police shooting against a crowd of native Colombians who have been protesting for the last couple of weeks, President Álvaro Uribe admitted during a televised press conference that a police man did shoot against the protesters.

Three people have died since the manifestations started on October 11th, two of them last Tuesday when more than 12.000 indigenous people from different communities started a march from Piendamó (Cauca) to the city of Cali.

Still, the president insisted emphatically that even though the shots were fired, the two people who died this week were killed by an explosion because they had been handling homemade “terrorist” bombs, as called it. Uribe also assured that he will travel to the city of Popayan, in the south of the country, to have a meeting with the indigenous leaders on Sunday.
