Crew Scuttles Drug Sub Off Colombia
May 18 -- The four crewmen of a semi-submersible boat apparently being used to haul illegal drugs scuttled the vessel in the Pacific when they realized U.S. and Colombian naval forces had spotted them, the Colombian navy said

“The apparatus was manned by four Colombians who were captured. The suspects, on noting the presence of the authorities, opened the valves and sank the device,” the Colombian navy said.
The vessel was spotted by the guided missile frigate USS Simpson during an anti-drug operation in the Pacific Ocean.
Drug traffickers use the self-propelled semi-submersible vessels to transport up to 12 tons of cocaine.
