Almeria midfielder Fabian Vargas has suffered a broken fibula during Colombia’s clash with Ecuador on Saturday evening, and is expected to be missing for the remainder of the year.

Vargas only signed a three-year deal with Almeria this summer after switching from Boca Juniors, but initial reports suggest that the injury could see Vargas out of action for a number of months, which is a bitter blow for the player and the Andalusian club.

The Colombian team doctor announced after the match that Vargas will require immediate surgery, adding, “After my first diagnosis, I can confirm that [Fabian] Vargas has a fracture of his fibula and also has a rupture of the ligament in his left ankle.
