Colombia Banana Workers End Strike

May 21 -- The roughly 17,500 people employed on some 300 banana plantations in northwestern Colombia’s Uraba region returned to work Wednesday after nearly two weeks on strike, the growers association said.

An 8 percent salary hike was the central element of the labor accord that brought about an end to the strike, the spokesman for the Augura organization, Luis Alberto Sanin, told reporters.

He added that the businessmen and the unionists also reached agreement on other economic benefits for workers, including housing, recreation and culture.
